The Deep Dive (Not Finished Yet)

1. “From the buildings in which we live and work, to the cars we drive, or the knives and forks with which we eat, everything we use was designed to create some sort of marriage between __form__ and __function__.”

2. The folks at IDEO state that they are not experts in any given area. But, they do claim to be experts on the __process in which you design stuff__, which they apply to the innovation of consumer products.

3. After the team of designers is brought together, told the problem, and informed they have five days to “pull it off,” what phase of the design process do they immediately engage in?
-Brainstorming

4. Give two examples of what the team members did during this phase.

a.Defining specific problems of shopping carts.

b.How to fix that.

5. List five rules-of-thumb that IDEO employees follow when they share ideas during the brainstorming phase:

a.One conversation at a time.

b.Stay focused.

c.Encourage wild ideas.

d.Defer judgement.

e.Build on the ideas of others.

6. Why should wild (and sometimes crazy) ideas be entertained during the brainstorming phase?
-They try to actually listen to all the ideas of the other people and not just blow them off because all ideas need to be taken seriously because you never know when the perfect idea might come up. And also you can build on those wild ideas to make better ideas.

7. After the brainstorming phase was over, the team narrowed down the hundreds of ideas by _____voting________ for those ideas that were not only “cool” but also ______buildable_____ in a short period of time. What phase of the design process is this called?
-Explore possibilities.

8. IDEO believes that the ideas and efforts of a ____team____ will always be more successful than the planning of a lone genius.

9. Once the ideas were narrowed down and divided into categories, the group was split into four smaller teams. What phase(s) of the design process was each of these groups responsible for?
-Model or prototype.

10. The leaders at IDEO believe that ___playful___ behavior and a ___comfortable___ environment are two important reasons why their employees are able to think quickly and creatively to produce innovative results.

11. Sometimes, people come up with great solutions that work by trying their ideas first, and asking for ___forgiveness___ later.

12. Design is often a process of going too far and having to take a few steps back. What phase of the design process would the critique of the four mock-ups come under?
-Refine.

13. Upon critique of the four teams’ models, it was obvious that none of the teams had developed an optimum solution. However, the people at IDEO believe that it is important to ___fail____ often in order to ____succeed____ sooner.

14. What percentage of the entire week’s time did it take to fabricate the final prototype?
-20%

15. Instead of showering his design team with a tremendous amount of praise, what did the boss require his employees to do with their new design?
-Get out there and test it out.

16. Of all the things that we are surrounded by every day, what has not been placed through the design process?
-Nature.

Conclusion

1. What did you find to be the most impressive part of the team’s effort?

2. What advantages are there to having a design team with members that have non-engineering backgrounds?

3. There was a point in the process where a self-appointed group of adults stepped up, stopped the ideas, and redirected the group to break up into teams. Why was this done?

4. At the end of the video, Dave Kelly states, “Look around. The only things that are not designed are the things we find in nature.” Can you think of anything that would contradict this statement?

Glider Challenge

DESIGN PHASE:
1. The challenge of this activity was to create a glider witht the materials provided.
2. There are no rules of brainstorming but it helps to do it as a colaborative effort. Our idea at first was to make a glider with very long wings. But that didnt work out so we decided to go with a smaller sized glider.
3. The criteria was to create a glider that could either go a long distance or have a good air time. We were provided with one thick piece of balsa wood and several thinner pieces of balsa wood. And also tissue paper.

4.

TEST PHASE:

Preformance: Our glider preformed better than expected. If we made better use of our class time then Im sure we could have created a much better glider. Also it would probably help for next time if we had some better glue. The very last time that we threw our glider it actually flew very well.

TED pt I - Ideas worth Spreading?

  1. TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a website devoted to ideas worth spreading. They hold conferences in California durring the spring and in the UK durring the summer.

  2. The purpose of the website is to spread ideas. The website contains videos of people speaking at the conventions that they hold. All of the videos are about spreading ideas that can help change attitudes, lives, and also the world.

  3. The topics that most interest us would be technology, design, entertainment, and science.

  4. The Rise Of Personal Robots- This has a lot to do with our future. Very interesting to think about because we are engineers and having robots around could definitely solve many of our problems. Singing After A Double Lung Transplant- That seems really incredible to me. She was told she would never be able to sing again but she overcame it and was able to sing once again. How I Built A Toaster--From Scracth- This video could be interesting to us because as engineers we build things and model things. Building a toaster from scratch would be pretty hard but as problem solvers we could work on it and do it.

  5. Use Art to Turn the World Inside Out.

  • Art is about spreading your ideas and thoughts through visual elements.

  • Perfect video for the TED website because they are both about spreading ideas.

  • The conflict between the Jews and Muslims has become so big that they don't even know why they hate eacthother anymore. They are just brought up being taught to hate the other person.

6. I am already involved in art. I write music. Music is also an art for where you can express your emotions and ideas about society or the world. I just need to get my music out there into the world so I can voice my opinion about things.

Reverse Engineering: Mechanicnal Product - Functional Analysis

  1. The primary function of the headphones is to provide the consumer with the aqbility to listen to audio without it playing out loud.
  2. I think that the product workds by getting an audio signal from the device that it is plugged in to. Then the signals go up through the wire and to the headphones and then into the consumers ears.

  3. Black Box:

4. The mechanical components that are visable are that you can adjust the length of the bar that goes across your head to make it fit perfectly to your head. Also the actual headphones themselves move around.
5. The wire and the speakers inside the headphones are hidden so I can not accurately describe how they work inside the headphones.

Gamification

1.) Why is it a good idea to prepare the students for the future? What kind of future are they being prepared for?

2.) Do you think that companies are tricking people into paying for these simple games?

3.) Do you believe that some of these games could have became this popular even if it wasn't for Facebook?

Graphic Design: What's Going On In This Design?

My Partner is William Howard.

  • This advertisement is from the Magazine called Wired.

  • The product being marketed is Bluetooth Headsets.
  1. Message Content: The content of the message is very descriptive and helpfully explains each of the Bluetooth Headsets. They also give pros and cons.

  2. Size and Shape: The add covers up one side of a page. It's fairly big and the shape is easy to follow.

  3. Readability: The add is very clear and easy to read. The text is a dark color which makes it very readable.

  4. Needs the Audience: It understands the problems that people reading the add might encounter while trying to find the right Bluetooth headset for them. It even understands that people like to buy things that both look attractive and are good quality.

  5. Use of Proven Design Principles and Elements:

Design Principles: proportion and scale- The add proportioned so that the visuals take up half of the page and the writing does also.

Design Elements: Color- Nice color that stands out and catches my eye. Form and Shape- The form and shape of the add is also very effective. It presents the product in a nice but easily understabdable way.

Conclusion:

1. What are trends? Why is it important to identify them prior to graphic design?

---Trends are what is in or popular at the time and what people seem to really be in to. They are important so that graphic designers know what they need to get the publics attention.

2. How does human nature play a role in how a product is marketed to a specific demographic group?

---Human nature plays a role in how a product is marketed because it is human nature to look for products that interest you. And it's human nature for people to try and create products that will most likely attract a large amount of people of that specific demographic group.

3. How is a potential audience identified?

---A potential audience is identified by determining a group/or groups of people that participate in certain activities and what not. If you are making a certain skateboard product then your audience will obviously be skaters and people who skate, or also store owners that want to cary the product in there stores.

4. What must you discover about the target audience prior to graphic design?

---You must discover the kind of things your audience likes and is interested in. And also you must find out what their favorite things about those products are so that can give you an idea about creating your product.

  1. 1.) The phone has balance and proportion/scale. Both sides of the phone are balanced and look equal.

2.) The shape of the phone is rectangular and very large, which I personally really like about the phone.

1.) The biggest part of choosing a guitar for me (Besides the sound of it) is the way it looks. The shape and the color of the guitar is what I love about it.

2.) The texture of the body of the guitar is very smooth and it feels amazing. The fretboard is really easy to slide up and down.

1.) Cars utilize many of the design elements and principles.
2.) Color, texture, shape, balance, proportion and scale. When somebody is going to buy a car they look and pay attention to all of these. If you dont like on of theses elements then you most likely wont buy the car.

This picture of my phone shows a special feature that it has. My phone has a kick-stand on the back of it. This allows for watching videos by just laying the phone on it's side and the kick-stand holds it up.

Content is King.

1.) The one thing that I love doing more than anything is playing guitar. It is my main interest and hobby that I have.

2.) Almost all bands and musicians use blogging to promote their music. Also guitar companies and such use blogging to share about new models coming out and things of that sort.

3.) I could see myself blogging about music. I write music and I could definitely see myself blogging about my music.

Facebook

FACEBOOK!
I saw the picture that Mr. Olsen had posted that had the Middle Eastern looking men holding up a sign that said "Facebook" on it. They were also hold up other signs that were written in other languages so I have no idea what they were saying. But my interpretation of the picture is that the social networking site Facebook is taking over. It's everywhere now. Everybody that I know has a Facebook and I even know people from other countries that have accounts on Facebook. Not just social networking in general but also Facebook is growing like crazy and becoming bigger than ever before and is becoming known world wide. This just goes to show you how far technology has come and what a big part of our lives it is now.

Engineering Design: Project 2.4.1 - Design Project

My partner is Jake.
  • The problem that we were faced with was choosing a design brief and designing it with the CAD software.

  • We decided to make the candy dispenser because we both really like candy and since we both share an interest in it, it was the best one to choose.

  • First we had to define the problem which was understanding what it was that we had to do. Then we had to brainstorm with a possible idea for our candy dispenser and play around with it. There were constraints for the design but we sort of needed to change it up a little bit for our desing. The last thing is to communicate the results of our design. We only made one design and were very happy with it and we couldnt come up with any better ideas.

Survival At Sea Game

  • For this activity we were given a sheet of paper with 15 items. We had to then rate the items from most important to least imortant as if we were stranded on a small raft in the Pacific Ocean.
  • The top two choices that I made were the water and the army rations. I figured food and water would be the most important thing for survival because they are basic needs that our bodies have.
  • The least important to me were the rum and the oil. I figured that survival was more important than being found. And I figured that the rum and oil had no significance in order to survive but i was wrong.
  • My team agreed that the food and water was more important in order for us to survive.
  • Compared to the correct answers, our responsed were sort of way off. We only got one of them right and it was the shark repelent.

Tennis Ball Activity

  • The challenge of the activity was to make a tennis ball touch everybody's hand as we were standing in a circle.

  • Our plan was to put all of our hands in a cirlce touching eachothers hands. The first person would then lift their hand and the ball would move forward and roll onto the next persons hand and they would do the same thing as the first person.

  • The execution of our plan worked fairly well, it didn't work everytime but for the most part it was a good idea.

  • I would keep the idea of having all of our hands touching eachothers.

  • It would have been better if we somehow made a ladder out of our hands and the ball could easily fall down the path.

-The colaboration of our team is what really helped us to come of with such a great plan. Everybody was thinking as a team and we eventually came to a conclusion that we all agreed with. The best type of colaboration was for one person to come up with an idea and then everybody else build off of it.

-I believe that the game was just for fun at first, but then we all were getting excited and wanted to have the fastes time so it evolved into a competion.
